Our Southampton branch church participates in the work of the Christian Science Institutional Committee of New York State. Six members of the church take turns making visits every two weeks to the Riverhead jail. We read a Bible lesson sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly and discuss it with the inmates who attend our service. Anywhere from one to ten inmates will show up, and many begin attending regularly after their first service. We find that those who attend are comforted by the “new” view of themselves as innately good because they are God’s beloved children. When inmates are transferred to upstate facilities we make sure that local representatives of the Institutional Committee visit them in their new quarters.
